The Bible is quite specific about your responsibility to study for yourself:
II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. |

Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. |
Receive the word in various ways, but always search the scriptures to see if you are being told the truth.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: |
Not a famine of the word itself, but a famine of the hearing of the words – If you ask me, the famine is here, but you do not have to participate.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. |
You will err, not knowing the scriptures. Why? Many preachers will err and you will not know it unless you know the scriptures and try the spirits according to the scriptures. Scripture rules!
I John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit,
but try the spirits whether they are of God:
because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
